10/12/2008: Community Reach Project and Renovation Project of Lankathilaka Raja Maha Viharaya - Kandy.
The Lankathilaka Rajamaha Viharaya - situated at Handessa, Kandy – is a cruciform building that serves as an image house of The Buddha. The temple, full of exquisite painted scenes of the lives of 24 former Buddhas and a colossal seated image of Lord Buddha is a site of national importance & heritance.
Despite its utmost religious significance, the temple and its surroundings were neglected and left to ruin until the BMICH proposed and initiated a project to renovate and develop the temple and the community living around premises.
As an initiative to uplift the social standards of the many families that live close to the area – who are for many generations now dependant upon the arts of silver and brass craftsmanship – many steps were taken in the form of educational lectures, small loans etc.
The BMICH has pledged its support to the Temple and the surrounding communities for years to come to bring the true beauty to the serene location which commands charm and beauty.
