09/12/1966: SWRD Hall : OK for new plan

THE Ceylon Government's amended plan for the Bandaranaike Memorial Hall has been accepted by the People's Republic of China.

The Government has proposed the construction of a hall - cum - theatre and a hotel at an estimate cost of about Rs. 25,000,000.
The original plan was for an elaborate conference hall that would accommodate 500 delegates and 110 observers with a main auditorium and balconies.

The hall now planned will be a simple structure which will, however accommodate 800 persons.

The new suggestions of the government were conveyed by members of a delegation lead by Mr. V. C. de Silva, Director of Public Works, which visited Peking in this connection last month.

It is learnt that marble from China will be used for the construction of the building.

It has been suggested that the hotel should include a swimming pool.
